Womack, MEd, MA<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen you\u2019re meeting with someone\u2014for example, a new customer or a potential vendor\u2014you will get more from that meeting if you understand learning preferences. During a discussion, I once heard a client say, \u201cI have a clear picture of what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d I did not understand\u2014we were on the phone, and I hadn\u2019t sent anything to look at ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tI knew that people have different learning preferences but didn\u2019t really think too much about it. But by mixing the following three learning style preferences together, you will all get more from the next discussion:<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Visual: <\/strong>People who \u201ccan picture it\u201d or \u201csee what you\u2019re saying\u201d like to have something to look at. Print a document or make a slide to gain their attention.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Auditory: <\/strong>People who \u201chear it once and understand.\u201d Share a concise story that outlines the topic of the meeting so they can listen and gain a clearer understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Kinesthetic:<\/strong> People who have to \u201cget it\u201d or \u201cfeel it\u201d to understand. Ask them to underline key words in a handout, write certain notes or phrases down, or get up and walk to the other side of the room as they think about something.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe next time you meet with someone, plan to share information in all three ways. And pay special attention to what they tell you.
