I<\/span>f you’d to<\/span>ld me as<\/span> a child that I<\/span> would one day become the<\/span> president an<\/span>d CEO<\/span> of a national skilled<\/span> trade education group, I<\/span> would have never believed you. I was headed down the wrong path, not because I lacked ambition. I<\/span> was a classic troublemaker<\/span>\u2014bright but rebellious, constantly testing boundaries.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>n, one teacher changed everything. I<\/span>n 9th grade, she recognized my potential an<\/span>d believed i<\/span>n me when I<\/span> couldn\u2019t believe i<\/span>n myself. Her unwavering support an<\/span>d guidance didn\u2019t just help me turn my life around\u2014i<\/span>t i<\/span>nspired me to<\/span> do the<\/span> same for others. That\u2019s when I<\/span> decided to<\/span> become a teacher, determined to<\/span> recognize an<\/span>d support students who, like me, were at risk of going as<\/span>tray. I<\/span> gravitated to<\/span>ward adult education, realizing that many adults, much like my younger self, needed the<\/span> kind of support I<\/span> never received. Education was a chance for them to<\/span> rewrite the<\/span>ir stories, just as<\/span> I<\/span> had rewritten mine.<\/p>\n

To<\/span>day, I<\/span> lead StrataTech Education Group, which encompasses a network of skilled<\/span> trade schools, i<\/span>ncluding The<\/span> Refrigeration School an<\/span>d Tulsa Welding School. The<\/span>se i<\/span>nstitutions provide an<\/span> alternative to<\/span> traditional education, allowing adult learners to\u00a0train as<\/span> electricians, welders, line workers, an<\/span>d HVAC\/R technicians. Unfortunately, many still view the<\/span>se careers as<\/span>\u201cblue-collar\u201d jobs for those who couldn\u2019t afford\u00a0college. But that couldn\u2019t be further from the<\/span> truth.<\/p>\n

Breaking the<\/span> stigma around skilled<\/span> trades<\/span><\/h2>\n

Skilled<\/span> trades<\/span> are not a “fallback” option; they are a pathway to stable, well-paying careers that support our nation\u2019s infrastructure. Thanks to skilled tradespeople, every building, every light, and every HVAC system exists. Without them, our society wouldn\u2019t function. These jobs are no longer low-paying; to<\/span>day, skilled<\/span> trade professionals are i<\/span>n high demand. For those seeking financial i<\/span>ndependence, this i<\/span>s one of the<\/span> fastest an<\/span>d most reliable routes to<\/span> success<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the<\/span> physical demands of the<\/span>se careers often mean early retirements for seasoned workers i<\/span>n the<\/span>ir 50s, creating a significant need for new talent. The<\/span> good news i<\/span>s that Gen Z, usually called the<\/span> “to<\/span>olbelt generation,” i<\/span>s stepping up to<\/span> the<\/span> challenge. Unlike previous generations, the<\/span>y recognize the rewards of\u00a0skilled<\/span> trades<\/span>: competitive wages, job security, an<\/span>d the<\/span> autonomy of being an<\/span> expert i<\/span>n a field that will always be i<\/span>n demand.<\/p>\n

However, the<\/span> outdated stigma still lingers. The<\/span> reality i<\/span>s that skilled<\/span> trades<\/span> offer a path<\/span> to<\/span> wealth, i<\/span>ndependence, an<\/span>d respect. As <\/span>someone once labeled a “troublemaker<\/span>,” I<\/span> deeply relate to<\/span> underestimated people.<\/p>\n

The<\/span> people who thrive i<\/span>n the<\/span> trades- whether\u00a0the<\/span>y\u2019re welders, electricians, or HVAC technicians\u2014often share a similar background: the<\/span>y didn\u2019t have an<\/span> easy time i<\/span>n school and fought for a second chance. That\u2019s precisely who our schools serve. Our campuses are i<\/span>ntentionally located i<\/span>n major cities, near bus lines, an<\/span>d communities where students most need access. We meet the<\/span>m where the<\/span>y are.<\/p>\n

Serving the<\/span> students who need us most<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s always been about serving the<\/span> students who need us most. The<\/span>se individuals have\u00a0a clear goal: the<\/span>y need work, an<\/span>d the<\/span>y need i<\/span>t now. The<\/span>y have bills to<\/span> pay an<\/span>d families to<\/span> support. Our schools prioritize providing the<\/span>m with the<\/span> training an<\/span>d resources the<\/span>y need to<\/span> succeed.<\/p>\n

A shifting landscape i<\/span>n skilled<\/span> trades<\/span><\/h2>\n

The<\/span>re\u2019s also a profound shift happening within the<\/span> skilled<\/span> trades<\/span> i<\/span>ndustry. At StrataTech, we\u2019re proud to<\/span> say that women an<\/span>d people of color comprise a growing percentage of our student body, surpassing i<\/span>ndustry norms. Women alone account for approximately 12 percent of our students. We also strive to<\/span> create welcoming, i<\/span>nclusive campuses for all students. People of color make up nearly 75 percent of our student population, with most\u00a0of our schools\u2019 students coming from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Approximately 80 percent of our students are Pell-eligible, meaning the<\/span>y qualify for federal financial aid due to<\/span> the<\/span>ir financial need. This i<\/span>s a point of pride for us, as<\/span> i<\/span>t shows we\u2019re serving the<\/span> students who need us most, making the<\/span> most significant\u00a0i<\/span>mpact where i<\/span>t\u2019s needed most. Our schools help place around 5,000 graduates into skilled trade jobs each year.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>se graduates leave our schools with technical skills and a sense of pride an<\/span>d accomplishment. When the<\/span>y receive the<\/span>ir first job offers, many are stunned by<\/span> the<\/span> salaries the<\/span>y can now command, sometimes higher than the<\/span>y ever i<\/span>magined. I<\/span>t\u2019s a profound achievement: rewriting the<\/span>ir stories an<\/span>d creating new futures for the<\/span>mselves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
