When I started my remote social media management agency, I knew fostering a strong sense of connection and collaboration among team members would be essential but also challenging. After all, we\u2019re not just scattered across the U.S. and Canada; we\u2019re also independent contractors, each bringing unique schedules, perspectives, and goals to the table.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet over the years, I\u2019ve discovered that social media\u2014the tool we use to help our clients build their brands\u2014has become a powerful force in shaping our company culture. From fostering relationships to creating accountability, it\u2019s at the heart of how we operate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Building Relationships in a Remote World<\/h2>\n

One of the biggest misconceptions about remote work is that it lacks the personal connections of an office environment. I\u2019ve found the opposite to be true. Relationships are at the core of everything we do, and we prioritize them\u2014both with our clients and within our team.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, we use a private Facebook group to share updates, celebrate wins, and encourage one another. Even though we\u2019re physically apart, these moments of connection bring us closer. I also make a point to check in with our team regularly, ensuring that everyone feels supported and heard. The feedback we receive from our monthly anonymous surveys confirms it: Our team members feel more connected here than they ever did in traditional office settings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To further strengthen our bonds, we introduced \u201cLunch Connect,\u201d a voluntary monthly virtual lunch where team members are randomly paired to get to know each other better. This initiative has been met enthusiastically and fostered deeper connections among our remote team.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Communication as a Core Value<\/h2>\n

Strong communication is the foundation of any successful remote team, and we\u2019ve made it a cornerstone of our company culture. To reinforce this, we created a program called \u201cFundamentals,\u201d inspired by David Friedman\u2019s book, \u201cFundamentally Different.\u201d The program translates our core values into actionable behaviors, primarily focusing on communication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each week, one team member is assigned a specific fundamental that is aligned with our core values. For example, under the core value of \u201cCommunication,\u201d some of our Fundamentals include:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
