It comes from \u201c10\u201320\u201d and is part of the Ten Code used by CB radioers, who borrowed and adapted it from the police and emergency services.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt seems appropriate to use this question to kick off my first column in the year 2020. Let\u2019s apply the question to our overall work in learning and development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tWill we see things that are actually new and different enter our world in 2020? (As opposed to recycling old concepts by calling them by a new name. Those of us who\u2019ve done this work for a while are kind of over this\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhat did we learn about in 2019 that will burst forth and become a \u201cgo-to\u201d thing<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tHow will we finally prevail at work and apply new and different ideas to our old and tired approaches?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhat will be the new and different \u201cthing\u201d that also makes a difference to our learners and their learning retention? Because that\u2019s the point and all that really matters!<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIf your evaluation plan is old, tired, or practically non-existent, what will you choose to do to rev it up? A new tool? Are the items being evaluated measuring what is actually needed anymore? What is being done with the feedback? (Anything? Bueller?)<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIs 2020 the year we do more to rev up existing learning strategy rather than building a new one? Or will it be the other way around?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tNow let\u2019s apply the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s your 20?\u201d to you and <em>your<\/em> work in learning and development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tWhat are you working on right now?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAre the projects what you <em>want<\/em> to be working on?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIs your training or content making a difference \u2014a <em>real<\/em> difference to your learners?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAre you working with the person, people, and the teams you should be?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAre your projects reaching the right group of learners?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAre your projects bringing the level of value everyone expects\u2014or even better, exceeding that level?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAre your projects being evaluated in the right ways?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tIf the response to any or all of these questions is a resounding, \u201cNo!\u201d make the time to ask yourself: What will it take to change your responses to a resounding \u201cYes!\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>YOUR 20 PLAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tLet\u2019s begin to craft your <em>20 Plan<\/em> to make this happen.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAsk yourself these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tWhich types of projects do you <em>wish<\/em> you were working on (whether at your current organization or another)?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhat does <em>making a difference<\/em> mean to you in relation to the types of projects you wish you were working on?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWho are your learners going to be? Same as today or adding new people to the mix?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAre there skills you need to ramp up?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDo you have access to the proper tools?<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhose help do you need?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tTraining Matters!
