When was the last time you went to the doctor for a checkup? If you went in the last year, you\u2019re with the 78 percent of Americans who did so.<\/p>\n

When was the last time you had a checkup for your leadership abilities\u2014 your raw skills as a leader? Here are five key elements you should look at:<\/p>\n

  1. People Management<\/strong>: All leaders are members of HR\u2014they must know how to manage their employees through the employee supply chain, from interview to onboarding to termination. This includes laws and paperwork required to keep and maintain your employees at work.<\/li>\n
  2. Delegation:<\/strong> You can\u2019t do it on your own\u2014and you shouldn\u2019t. Learn to ask for help.<\/li>\n
  3. Motivation<\/strong>: This is the core of a solid Square Peg Leader\u2014and should be your focus, as well. If you know\u2014 and make use of\u2014employees\u2019 key motivators, you can increase their productivity because you\u2019re giving them what they<\/em> want and need.<\/li>\n
  4. Communication:<\/strong> This is the #1 challenge for leaders. How do you get the message across? How often? Is it informational or instructional? Is your message being received the way it was intended?<\/li>\n
  5. Conflict:<\/strong> Conflict as a leader is not bad\u2014in fact, it\u2019s necessary if you don\u2019t want a roomful of \u201cyes people.\u201d Knowing how to manage the different styles\u2014and when to use them\u2014is an essential leadership tool.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
